Earlier this week, the WA State Government launched a new planning policy called Design WA. The new policy is due for gazettal on May 24th 2019, allowing for a 3 month roll out. Design WA is an initiative to ensure good design is at the centre of all development, from the early stages right through to delivery.
A new residential design code for apartments will replace Part 6 of the Residential Design Codes (R-Codes) for multiple-dwellings. Importantly, this is a performance-based policy and there will no longer be a deemed to comply pathway. In the words of Hon. Rita Saffioti Minister for Transport, Planning and Lands, “better planning can enhance wellbeing, feelings of connection and safety”.
