Mental Health Support Services Fitout
SPH were engaged to design a new workplace tailored to the unique needs of community mental health support service team in the Perth, WA region. The brief called for a highly considered environment that could support a hybrid work model, enable safe and collaborative staff interaction, and offer a calm, secure setting for both staff and service users.
At the heart of the design is a balance between openness and privacy. An open-plan layout encourages connection and collaboration, while strategically integrated private offices, quiet rooms, and acoustic screening ensure sensitive information is protected and confidential discussions can occur without disruption. Careful attention was given to acoustics and spatial arrangement to support the nature of the work carried out within the space.
Staff wellbeing and safety were paramount. Design interventions included a high staff station for physical security, controlled swipe access throughout the workplace, and a clearly defined separation between public and private zones. Visitors are welcomed into a light-filled, calming waiting area, with a dedicated meeting room for on-site consultations situated nearby for ease of access.
Natural light and biophilic connections were maximised through the layout, which frames views of the surrounding eucalyptus trees. A soft, neutral base palette is paired with natural textures such as timber and subtle ochre accents—a gentle nod to the client’s branding—adding warmth and familiarity without overwhelming the senses.
The fitout also thoughtfully responds to neurodivergent staff needs, incorporating adjustable lighting in office, meeting, and quiet spaces, along with tactile and acoustic materials to enhance comfort and calm. Three dedicated quiet rooms offer flexible, private areas for focused work or sensitive conversations, supporting a diverse range of staff and service requirements.
A generously sized kitchen and breakout space anchor the social heart of the office. Positioned to take full advantage of daylight and external views, this area offers a functional, inviting retreat for staff. Cost-effective finishes were carefully selected to align with the client’s budget while maintaining a high standard of aesthetics and usability.
This workplace fitout reflects a deep understanding of the people who use it—offering a secure, flexible, and supportive environment that aligns with the values of care and community embedded in the client’s mission.
